Ann is an optimist who believes a college education is a key driver of social and economic mobility. She joined the board in 2012 because she enjoys working with people committed to building a more equitable future and providing greater opportunities for Berkeley youth. Ann brings a broad range of business, civic, and nonprofit experience to BCF. After years of working for international trading firms in the aerospace and construction industries, Ann set down roots in Berkeley, where she founded a research consultancy and finally had time to connect with her local community. Diving in, she served on Berkeley’s Transportation Commission for nine years, including two years as chair. She also served as president and education programs director of a multimedia trade association. She co-founded and chairs an environmental coalition that won important mitigations for public schools, pedestrians and cyclists along a major transportation corridor.
Prior to 2013, Gwen worked in the corporate sector holding various administrative management positions with Fortune 100, 200 and 500 companies. Today she works in the non-profit sector as a Community Builder/Development Associate with Building Opportunities for Self-Sufficiency (BOSS) in Berkeley, an organization that helps homeless, low-income, and disabled people achieve self-sufficiency through housing, income, health and social justice, as well as fighting the root causes of poverty and homelessness. She speaks/lectures on social justice topics. She was recently the keynote speaker at UC Berkeley's Poverty & Homelessness Symposium and was part of a panel discussion for the Women League of Voters. In 2017, she was selected by Alameda County’s Board of Supervisor, Keith Carson (District 5), to serve as a Commissioner for District 5 for Alameda County’s Commission on the Status of Women. Gwen is also a mentor for the Berkeley Community Fund.
Carol L. Brosgart, M.D. serves on the boards of privately held companies and public, not-for-profit, domestic and global health organizations. She has served as a member on the faculty of the School of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco for the past four decades, where she is a Clinical Professor of Medicine, Biostatistics and Epidemiology in the Division of Global Health and Infectious Diseases. Dr. Brosgart received a B.S. in Community Medicine from the University of California, Berkeley and received an M.D. from the University of California, San Francisco. She is a long-time Berkeley resident where she was the founder and Medical Director of the East Bay AIDS Center at Alta Bates Medical Center in Berkeley, California, from 1987 until 1998. Dr Brosgart joined the BCF board in 2018 but has been a supporter and mentor for many years.
Paul Chapman is executive director of Inverness Associates, a consulting group that helps schools develop environmental sustainability in their facilities, operations and programs. His most recent publications include: Greening America’s Schools, Greening 2.0, and “Environmental Education and Sustainability in American Schools.” Previously he was principal of Head-Royce School in Oakland, and a member of the California Environmental Literacy Task. Raised in Illinois, he received a B.A. from Yale and an M.A. and Ph.D. from Stanford. He serves on the boards of the Chabot Space and Science Center, Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence, UC Berkeley Library, and the Ten Strands advisory board.
Chuck joined the BCF Board in 2011 and formerly served as Board President. Chuck “retired” in 2010 after the sale of the global legal recruiting company he co-founded. Throughout his 20+ years in legal recruiting, Chuck functioned as a career advisor to countless attorneys, and a key staffing partner to many of the Bay Area’s premier companies and law firms. He had previously been an employment lawyer and a founder and the executive editor of a monthly legal publication which he subsequently sold. Chuck joined the BCF Board as his twin boys transitioned from private school to Berkeley High, sparking his interest in helping bridge the disparity in opportunity between his own children and many of their classmates. Chuck and his wife of 25 years, Melinda Haag, both currently serve as mentors to BCF scholars.
Susie Goodin joined the BCF Board in 2008 and has been an active volunteer in schools since the first of her four daughters entered school in 1983. She taught elementary school in Vermont and California, and in the last 25 years has run K-8 school libraries and worked as a consulting librarian at two high schools. She has also chaired an independent school board, chaired a non-profit on behalf of Berkeley High School, and is currently on the Advisory Board for the Friends of the Oakland Public School Libraries. She completed her Ph.D. in Education at U.C. Berkeley in 2011, focusing on reading development and its link to school librarianship. She joined the board because she wants to work on making post-secondary education accessible to all BHS students.
Oseyi is a Product Management Lead at Square Inc. He has over 13 years of experience in the technology industry, spanning Product Management and Engineering roles. Prior to Square he was a Senior Product Manager at @WalmartLabs and led innovation initiatives across Walmart’s store and e-commerce businesses. He has also worked at Monsanto and Twitter and is currently an advisor at Fuse Inventory and Ulula. He holds an MBA from the University of California, Berkeley Haas School of Business and degrees from Washington University in St Louis and Truman State University. As an immigrant to the US and a recipient of scholarships to fund the majority of his education, he is passionate about ensuring others get the same opportunities. Oseyi was first introduced to the BCF during his MBA program, when he participated as a Board Fellow on BCF's board. He joined the board in 2014.
Jackie chose to join the BCF board in 2015 because its mission is personally meaningful. She and her husband Larry Munn have a son, Josh Gray who would’ve been a prime candidate for a BCF scholarship when he graduated from Berkeley High in 2000. Josh spent his early years in foster care and was a first-generation college student when he attended Howard University. Jackie is a strategic communications practitioner, working with companies and nonprofits to develop engaging content and execute their communication strategies. Her clients have included UC Berkeley, Diversity Woman Media, Tenderloin Neighborhood Development Corporation, San Francisco Heritage, California Health Report, Sunset Publishing, Public Health Institute, and the San Francisco Jewish Community Federation.
Stephanie was nominated to the Board in June of 2013, and immediately joined the fundraising and admin committees. She now serves as the Board Treasurer and the chairperson of the “Conversations” event. Her experience as Galileo Learning’s Director of Finance was great training for the Treasurer role. Her much earlier experiences working in development and marketing for the American Diabetes Association and Charles Schwab have also been useful. Stephanie became hooked on the work of BCF when she interviewed her son’s BHS classmates for our 2013 Scholar Class. She was awed by the scholar candidates’ determination and the independence they displayed as successful students and college applicants. Stephanie now takes great pleasure in mentoring two BCF scholars and helping the organization grow and thrive.
MartÍn has well over fifteen years of experience working in K-12 and Higher Education. He currently works at Berkeley City College as the Associate Dean of Educational Success. His unique experience as a classroom teacher, university adjunct faculty, community college program analyst, Early Academic Outreach Program Director and early admission/college outreach professional provides him a unique perspective into the kinder to college/career pipeline-pathway. He leads with attention to Equity first then Access, and a praxis grounded in Social Justice. MartÍn is known for his over the top stories and humorous motivational speeches. He has a unique ability to connect with students and adults from the rural communities of Madera to the metro communities of the Bay Area.
Jessica joined the Board in 2007 right before the start of the High Hopes scholarship program. She served as Board President from 2009 until 2015 and saw the program expand from 10 students to 100 students. In addition to BCF, Jessica works with Oakland second graders to improve their reading. Jessica practiced as a litigation attorney for 40 years and is still counsel to a major international firm. She is an avid traveler.
A seasoned leader who has solved complex challenges in myriad sectors including government, non-profit and private business, William has served as CEO for Goodwill San Francisco, San Mateo and Marin Counties since March 2016. Prior to joining Goodwill, William served as the Deputy City Manager for the City of Berkeley. His accomplishments in Berkeley include the establishment and construction of the Gilman Fields (Tom Bates Regional Sports Facility), development of the 2020 Vision designed to close racially predictable opportunity gaps in Berkeley Public Schools, and the creation of the first governmental environmental working group in Berkeley to reduce energy use and increase reuse in government operations and facilities. William joined the BCF board in 2017.
Pat recently joined the BCF board; however she and her husband Merrill have been enthusiastic supporters of BCF for many years. She also serves on the Board of Oberlin College, her alma mater. Past Board service includes Crounse Corporation, a river transportation company in her Kentucky hometown; Crisis Support Services of Alameda County, Luna Dance Institute in Berkeley, and Alliant International University.
During her 16 years as Founder and CEO of BASIS, Inc., Pat piloted the company’s growth from a small startup to a position of prominence among West Coast systems and network integrators. In 1996 she orchestrated BASIS’ acquisition. Prior to BASIS, Pat was a research analyst for government and university projects, with primary emphasis on survey methods.
After graduating from Oberlin she taught high school biology before obtaining her masters degree in Counseling from the University of Michigan.
Janet Tam is a licensed architect and a founding partner and CEO of Noll & Tam Architects. Noll & Tam is a 40-person firm that has been in practice for 25 years in Berkeley and focuses on the design of public and institutional projects that strive to make a visible and positive difference within their communities. Her local architectural work includes the YMCA teen center, the renovation of the North Berkeley Senior Center, and multiple projects on the UC Berkeley campus. She grew up in Richmond and received degrees from UC Berkeley, Janet has been a Berkeley resident for 30 years, is married to Kit Ratcliff, a third generation Berkeleyite and BCF mentor, and their daughters are proud alumni of Berkeley High. Janet joined the BCF Board in 2012 and is also chair of the Development Committee.
Jules joined the BCF board in 2010 after being recruited by Susie Goodin, a board member and fellow Berkeley High parent. Jules has been the CEO and President of Tippett Studio, Inc, a Berkeley company, for 25 years. Tippett Studio creates animation and visual effects for films, commercial, TV and Themed Entertainment, both for the US and China. With a background in art, documentary film and feature film postproduction, the step up to managing a business grew an awareness of the complexities and responsibilities of the lead role. Jules and her husband Phil have two daughters both who attended Berkeley High. Always aware of the enormous discrepancies in educational opportunities, and the power and strength of community, Jules is proud to be part of a group that provides a vital link to educational success for kids lacking equity.
