I had only been living in Berkeley for a few months, but I was utterly determined to succeed in this new society. But with my dad back in Mexico and my mom working full-time in Berkeley, my adjustment was made harder as I was forced into a solitary path both at school and at home. Every morning I would be woken up by my grandfather’s high-pitched scream so that I could get up and take him to the restroom. I’d put on my clothes, and go over and also get my brother ready for school. It is through these responsibilities that I learned about the importance of dedication and devotion to my community.
