My mom suffered the most. She had to take care of us, her two boys, all by herself, but she was a soldier willing to fight to protect her kids. I made my best effort to make her life easier. As she spoke almost no English, I was her translator and interpreter. I developed a deep sense of responsibility at a young age, which helped me understand that I would need to work hard to make it through difficult times. Helping my mom has taught me to appreciate the value of always lending a helping hand, because giving back to the community is rewarding. Although I devote most of my time to my schoolwork to prepare for my future, I have made sure that I share my talents and skills with others. Putting my best effort into my work has put me in a position where I can be one of my small school’s academic leaders. My classmates often look to me for help, and I happily share my knowledge with them so that they too can succeed.
“Luis is a deep-thinking, extraordinarily motivated and self-reliant young man who has overcome extreme obstacles to become the top academic senior student in our small school, Communication Art and Sciences. His intelligence, maturity, independence, awareness and quest for knowledge make him a model student and community leader.”
