Growing up in East Oakland, California was not always appealing, well at least not to me.  My first home wasn’t the best neighborhood, poverty-stricken, drugs and drive-by’s flourished. My parents did their best to shield me away from bad influences, by not letting me go around the corner to the street liquors and by taking me to Berkeley often. Even though I grew up in a rough neighborhood, it didn’t seem like it. Actually it feels like my neighborhood was some type of façade, it held a deeper meaning, and example of what not to be like. My neighborhood and environment built my character and strength. I am a hardworking, dedicated student, who is the first in her family to attend a four-year university. Although obstacles have occurred in my life, I still strive forward to accomplish my goals and dreams.

Dominique’s updates

“Dominique is smart, determined, mature and hardworking. She is a true diamond in the rough, independent and strong; at barely 4ft she has gained the respect of her teachers and peers. She is performing extremely well in the strongest academic program that Berkeley High has to offer, the IB program.” Teacher, Berkeley High School
